Hupu, October 31st: According to the latest report from the famous reporter Matt Lawton of The Times, if West Ham United is relegated from the Premier League this season, British taxpayers will bear an additional expenditure of 1.25 million pounds.

Under West Ham United's 99-year lease with the London Stadium, its current annual rent of £2.5 million will be halved if the club is relegated to the Championship.

This year, management of the stadium, built to host the 2012 London Olympics, was handed over to the Greater London Authority, with the London Heritage Development Company withdrawing from the operating company E20 Stadium LLP and being replaced by GLA Holdings Ltd.

But the latest financial report as of March 31, 2024 shows that because the rent paid by West Ham United is insufficient to cover the operating costs of the stadium, public funds will suffer an operating loss of 20.9 million pounds.

West Ham United's £2.5 million rent at the London Stadium will be halved if they are relegated to the Championship.

West Ham United is currently ranked 19th in the Premier League standings, with only 4 points from nine games. Such a performance leaves no doubt that taxpayers may be on the hook for more costs under a clause in the stadium's franchise agreement.

Graham Potter was sacked at the end of September after recording just one win in the team's first five Premier League games. But the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo did not bring much improvement. In his first game in charge, he drew 1-1 away from Everton and then suffered three consecutive defeats.

This week, The Times also reported that Lucas Paqueta is keen to leave West Ham United in January.
