Telegraph: Fenway intends to acquire Getafe, they notice the advantages of the multi-club model
June 18, The Telegraph reported that Fenway Sports Group intends to acquire Getafe.
Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is exploring the possibility of acquiring La Liga team Getafe as part of its strategy to build a football multi-club territory. In 2024, FSG carried out a major restructuring of the football division, aiming to acquire a second club to cooperate with Liverpool's operations.
This plan became a key reason for the return of former sports director Michael Edwards, the new FSG football CEO is passionate about expanding his business beyond Merseyside. FSG made it clear at the time that its first choice was to acquire a single club rather than to follow the model of Manchester City's Abu Dhabi investors forming the City Football Group.
The Boston group had failed to acquire Bordeaux, France and Malaga, Spain, and now turned its target to Getafe. A FSG spokesman confirmed that the options are being evaluated but has not yet determined whether to make a full acquisition.
Getafe ranked 13th in La Liga last season, and his current boss recently expressed his intention to sell after promising to complete the modernization of the stadium. While any acquisition will focus on club reconstruction as the top priority, incorporating the right European team into the FSG territory may also have a positive impact on Liverpool.
FSG noticed that competitors such as Manchester City have gained significant advantages in youth training through the multi-club system. They can not only rent young players to brother clubs to accumulate experience, but also sign potential overseas rookies to test whether they have the potential to enter the Premier League through training in competitive leagues.
