Durant reacts after Green disproves his opinion on winning NBA championship

Basketball

According to US sports media F/W analyst Chaitanya Dadwal, the personalities of Durant and Draymond Green often force them to quarrel, especially considering that they both have a passion for the game. The former teammates, who played together with the Warriors, recently got into a back-and-forth after Draymond Green appeared to take issue with Kevin Durant's belief that scoring is more important to winning a championship. In a recent interview with The Athletic, Green addressed those who believe defense has no role in winning championships.

Draymond: "Those who don't believe defense is valuable are not going to win at all. I don't think anyone really cares about the opinions of people who don't win all the time, because your opinion is zero.

Reporter: "So I hear that, but Kevin wins.

Draymond: "He's winning here, (and) the defense here is..."

Reporter: "It's incredible.

Draymond: "Absolutely.

Durant saw the exchange on social media and dryly pointed out facts that showed the offense was the bigger focus when the Warriors won back-to-back titles. "Offense is????," wrote Durant on the X, puzzled. The Warriors' offense was No. 1 in the league, while their defense wasn't even in the top 10 during their championship runs in 2017 and 2018. In fact, neither the Cavaliers nor the Warriors were top-10 defensive teams in the league during those years.

Essentially, there seems to be a misunderstanding of words somewhere. Durant never said offense was the only important factor in winning championships. However, Green seems to have understood that he feels defense has no role in winning a championship. "They understand what I'm saying but people are purposely taking my words out of context and you know I just wanna dunk on me lol," Durant wrote on the X, while admitting it was a misunderstanding, apparently. "They were offended by everything I said. How ironic," he further added. "I can feel the jealousy and insecurity through your burning," the Rockets superstar said when a fan criticized him for saying offense was more important than defense.

If you put weight on those two things, Durant might say offense is 70% important, which means defense still needs 30% to get a win, even a 60-40 score. But Green seems to think Durant thinks defense contributes nothing to championships (i.e. has 0% value), which is far from the truth.

Eddie Gonzalez, a close friend of Durant, believes Draymond Green simply needs to respond when being baited by reporters because it's second nature to him, clamoring in the media about his desire to replace Charles Barkley. Durant has acknowledged multiple times that defense is important, echoing Draymond Green's comments, but in his opinion, offense is more important. Even in the exchange referenced above, Green never explicitly addressed Durant until reporters brought him up. Once Green understands how the media conveyed the wrong interpretation to him, he may reconsider his stance.
