Derek Ross talks about his injury: “I asked God countless times why he was injured”

According to US sports media F/W reporter Gautam Varyl. Derek Ross is the biggest regret in modern NBA history. When Ross became the youngest MVP in NBA history, he looked destined to be great, but a series of injuries derailed his career. In a recent interview with HoopsHype , Ross was asked if he had asked God or the doctor about why he had been hurt all the time.

"I never asked the doctor why I was injured," Ross said. "They just gave me a result. But I asked God countless times. After a while, I stopped asking. I knew I had to go with the flow. It was part of it from Chicago. It was like, hey, if I could get out of here, I could go anywhere. I made it and God put me back there, like in Chicago," Ross added. "So I think, man, I'm here. I have to live with some kind of goal. What's my goal? As I get older, I start to see my goal is to show people you can get through it."

The Chicago Bulls picked Chicago native Rose with the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and it didn't take long for him to make an impact. He was named Rookie of the Year and was selected into the All-Star squad as a sophomore. Then, in his third season in the NBA, Ross was named an MVP after averaging 25.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.6 blocks in 2010-11. The Bulls seem to have found Michael Jordan's heir, but things are about to happen with a terrible mistake.

Rose will miss the entire 2012-13 season after tearing the ACL in the 2012 playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. In October 2013, during the preseason, he finally had a long-awaited return but failed to stay on the court for too long. Rose tore his meniscus on his right knee in November and was then ruled out for the remainder of the 2013-14 season. He suffered the same injury again in February 2015 but was able to return in time before the playoffs. However, the injury nightmare wasn’t over and the Bulls decided to part ways in 2016. He was traded to the New York Knicks, and in those years the team would keep trading him, which was simply unimaginable. However, they knew very well that he would never be what he was.

In the next few years, Ross has gone through many teams in the league and showed his former glitter. He eventually retired in 2024, averaging 17.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks in his career. People wonder what he could achieve without injury. Bulls commentator Stacey King claims Rose’s trajectory was like before Jordan was injured. It may be a bit far-fetched, but he probably has accomplished some special feats.

Although Ross's career has not been as smooth as many expected, his persistence is commendable. Despite his injuries, he still played in the NBA for 15 seasons. Ross found that he did not give up easily in the many situations when he was absent due to injury, but persisted and inspired many people in the process.
